The rise of mobile gaming

In 1997, Nokia introduced the game Snake on its phones, marking the beginning of mobile gaming. Fast forward to today, the industry is now worth worth £4.2 billion in the UK.

Here’s how mobile gaming has reshaped the industry in the last 20 years.

The history of mobile gaming

It all began with basic games like Snake, Tetris, and Solitaire. Readily available on most mobile devices, they captivated early phone users with their simple, retro graphics and easy-to-understand concepts.

But it wasn’t until the introduction of smartphones that we saw a real boom in mobile gaming. With Apple introducing the iPhone in 2007 (closely followed by the App Store in 2008), for the first time in history, developers could create and distribute games directly to consumers on a huge scale.

Since then, mobile games have come a long way – especially from their origins. Nowadays, mobile games feature stunning graphics, intricate gameplay, and immersive storylines that rival traditional PC and console games.

Why is the industry growing?

  1. Convenience and accessibility

Around 98% of Brits have a mobile phone, which makes this form of gaming so accessible. Whether you choose to have a quick game on the morning commute, over a lunch break, or just slumped on the sofa at home, the sheer ease of mobile gaming has contributed to its exponential growth.

  1. Diverse game selection

Unlike traditional games that were often aimed at younger men, mobile gaming attracts a much broader audience. From casual games like Candy Crush and bingo apps to complex strategy games, the variety means that there’s something for everyone.

This inclusivity across different age groups and interests has contributed to the growth of the industry.

  1. Social interaction and community building

Multiplayer and online games are also good for social interaction. With most modern games having chat room features, you can start to forge alliances with other gamers and make friends.

If multiplayer shoot ‘em ups or online games with strangers around the world aren’t your bag, you can still swap your latest scores with family and friends!

What’s next for the sector?

The mobile gaming industry isn’t showing any signs of slowing down. Looking ahead, it’s thought that technology will continue to play an important role. For example, the rollout of 5G networks promises faster and more reliable connectivity, allowing more opportunities for immersive and sophisticated experiences.

Final thoughts…

Love it or hate it, mobile gaming has reshaped the entertainment landscape. Once reserved for hard-core gaming fans, gaming has become something for everyone. While it’s hard to know what’s around the corner for the industry, there’s one thing for certain – mobile games are here to stay.
