Rotary laser levels: What are they and how do they work?

Looking for the next device to streamline your work on-site?

A rotary laser level is one that rotates a beam horizontally and vertically at 360 degrees. In doing so, it gives you total laser coverage of an area. Available with self-levelling or manual-levelling options, this versatile tool is not to be confused with a laser measuring tool.

If you’re ready to level up your setup, keep reading.

How does a rotary laser level work?

Rotary laser levels send fast, bright beams of lights with complete accuracy, which creates the optical illusion of a 360-degree plane. They do this by using a spinning prism.

As it rotates, the prism reflects the laser beam and projects a perfectly straight line. This can be seen as three-dimensional on flat surfaces and walls. It’s an advanced tool that illuminates lateral planes, not just a static and solid line.

How to use a rotary laser

  • Calibrate:

Before you use a rotary laser, you’ll need to set it up. Place it on a level surface. Typically, the device will sit on a tripod or have adjustable legs that ensure perfect stability before you start. Just make sure it’s clear of walkways so it doesn’t pose a hazard for slips and trips.

  • Adjust:

Once in position, you can turn on the laser level and adjust the height and angle of the laser beam in the desired direction. The laser then projects its line around the space or room, giving you an accurate reference point for your work.

Advantages of rotary lasers

  1. Accuracy

Since they’re so incredibly accurate, rotary lasers enable heightened precision for quality results. They provide a level line that’s visible both indoors and outdoors, excelling over manual tool.

  1. Time savings

Compared to traditional bubble levels, rotary laser levels save time. Since the laser line will be projected all over the space or room you’re working with, there’s no need to change the level position as you’re using it.

  1. User-friendly operation

Despite being an advanced tool, a rotary laser level should be easy to set up and use. Even for the workers who might not have years of experience on-site, these devices come with clear and simple instructions.

  1. Increased range

Rotary laser levels bring a longer range than traditional bubble levels and other tools, meaning that they can be used for bigger projects and in outdoor areas, including large commercial buildings.

  1. Flexibility

Lastly, rotary level lasers excel in their versatility. They can be used across multiple sectors and therefore various applications too. From laying tiles to installing cabinets and from surveying to landscaping, there are so many applications facilitated by rotary laser levels.

How to choose the right laser level

Ready to go ahead and bring your work to the next level? When you’re choosing the best piece of kit for your specific trade, it’s worth thinking about its range, accuracy, and durability. It needs to suit the size of the space you’re working in, and it should be built to last too.

Finally, think about your budget. Rotary laser levels might not be cheap, but the cost-saving benefits could help your business for years to come.
