Popular locations across Wrexham have formed the backdrop to the first feature length film made both in and about the town.

Written and directed by local filmmaker, Robert Corcoran, ‘You Are Invited To’ follows the director during the week leading up the premiere of his feature film debut in Wrexham.

Work on the 61 one minute comedy film began over 12 months ago, with Robert writing the script across three nights in July 2015.

Speaking to Wrexham.com about the concept behind ‘You Are Invited To’, Robert said: “Me and my friend Matthew Griffiths wanted to make a big football film. We’ve been making short films together since we were 12 and wanted to really go for something huge. I wrote a huge 93 page script set at Penycae Football club, but unfortunately we didn’t have enough time or money to finish it.

“So I rewrote the script as “You Are Invited to”, partly inspired by how difficult it had been for me recently to get projects completed- it was a film about a film premiere.

“We used all the football footage from 2014 as well as filming everything else in 2015- it was a crazy thing to edit.”

The film, which is described as ‘the biggest film in Wrexham’s history’ features local talent, Scott Baines, Eve Catherwood, Kerry Maule, Matthew Griffiths & Andrew Ball. There’s also a treat for fans of pop-punk group Neck Deep, with vocalist Ben Barlow also making a cameo in the film.

Robert, who has recently graduated, said: “It’s a film about fame at a local level and how enticing and destructive it can be. Pursuing artistic success somewhere like Wrexham can feel like a great juxtaposition- when what we thrive on is local business and other interests. This film was my crazy, over the top, comedic way of exploring that.”

Filming for ‘You Are Invited To’ took place at several well-known locations across Wrexham, including The Plas Coch, The North and South Wales Bank, Undegun, La Baguette and The Lemon Tree (to name but a few!)

Speaking about why the film was set in Wrexham, Robert added: “As far as Wrexham is concerned, I just love this place. We really do have a fantastic town, filled with interesting people, places and great local businesses.

“I’d always wanted to make the biggest film Wrexham had ever seen- and a year since I started writing, we’ve done it.”

Since it’s release the film has gained a lot of positive attention, with ‘You Are Invited To’ selected as part of the North Wales International Film Festival. Earlier this week Robert also appeared on ‘Popup Studio Live’ on Henblas Street to discuss the film.
