Wrexham Students Get Involved In Phoenix Project
Students from Coleg Cambria in Wrexham recently took part in the North Wales Fire and Rescue Service’s innovative Phoenix project.
The project, part of a Welsh Government initiative, aims at redirecting the energy of young people towards productive and worthwhile activities which could integrate them more into their communities.
Traineeships students took part in the week- long session at Chirk Fire Station where they got involved in fire service activities such as hose running drills, fighting fires and search and rescue as well as learning useful day to day skills such as First Aid, Manual Handling, Risk Management and Fire Safety.
Jo Tincello, Traineeships Manager at Coleg Cambria said: “The students thoroughly enjoyed the course which gave them many opportunities to work as part of a team and enhance their co-operation skills. During the five days they were pushed in every way to draw out the best within themselves, all the time supported by a dedicated team, especially trained to work safely with young people.”
The course at Chirk was partially delivered by Coleg Cambria Traineeship student, Jasmyn Humphries, age 18 from Wrexham who is currently on placement with the Phoenix Team.
Jo added: “It was delightful to see Jasmyn instructing her peers. Jasmyn is an absolute credit to those who have worked to support her and she is clearly an asset to their team. As a college we are delighted to be able to support young people in the workplace and our traineeship programme highlights the huge contribution young people can make to businesses all over north east Wales.”
