A quick election poll of Wrexham.com readers indicates that it is all to play for as we head into the final two weeks of campaigning ahead of the General Election.
We asked readers “If the General Election was tomorrow who would you vote for in Wrexham?” , giving options of each candidate along with ‘undecided’ and ‘will not be voting’ as options.
The poll ran on the evening of the 25th (last night) for a couple of hours until we hit around 1,000 vote mark.
The result is off a very a unscientific sample of Wrexham.com readers thoughts on how they will vote. Polls such of these are lacking the segmentation and pre-qualification elements of ‘proper’ polls so treat it accordingly. The audience is in theory was the self selecting readership relevant to the Wrexham area.
Voting was anonymous and is not tracked, with basic functionality to try and avoid duplicate votes.
The results are below…
Long time Wrexham.com readers will be aware of previous straw polls we have run using the same basic method, including the EU Referendum poll along with previous General Election polls.
Yesterday was also the day of another poll, a ‘proper’ exclusive one by YouGov in conjunction with ITV Wales and Cardiff University. As they reported when releasing it: “Labour has opened a six point lead in Wales over the Conservatives. The latest results reveal both parties have gained ground since the last poll earlier this month, but it is Labour that has advanced the furthest.”
This election has seen Wrexham gain UK wide attention, with the constituency seen as an open battleground, being painted as a two horse race by many of the media coming to town for the first time in years as well as some A-List names.
Locally we saw a trip to Bangor-On-Dee Racecourse yesterday by the Prime Minister for the Welsh Conservative Manifesto launch alongside the Wrexham and Clwyd South candidates. Sadly our request to ask the PM some questions was rejected, something that others also encountered and created a bit of a issue with WalesOnline and the Daily Post as well. We did however send videographer/photographer to the event to keep an eye on what was going on.
Today has seen Eddie Izzard pop to King St coffee in the town centre in support of Labour, following in the footsteps of Steve Coogan in 2017. Moving to a gazebo place in the town centre, Mr Izzard has been busy taking selfies (as below with a local councillor) as well as campaigning with the Wrexham candidate.
Over the weekend internet sensation Bootlegger published a video (below) of a candidate endorsement, which at the time of writing has racked up 142,800 views which we think makes it the most watched piece of footage related to an election in Wrexham ever.
An interesting chat with Wrexham’s Plaid candidate @CarrieAHarper down the local @Plaid_Cymru this morning lads 🏴🏴🏴🏴🏴 pic.twitter.com/WQzNQKjyWj

Gazebos have popped up through town, with parties getting on the streets to drum up support, with The Brexit Party being one of several at the weekend along with their Wrexham candidate:

Tremendous reception this weekend in Wrexham. Despite the wet weather we talked to lots of people about our Lib Dem plans for the town centre. #lovewrexham #loveourtown #libdems #GE2019 pic.twitter.com/5SlhTZlcgj

The bookmakers are offering some odds on Wrexham and Clwyd South, however there is not much depth of market about. A current snapshot for future reference, and current indications, is included below.
With 15 days until the polls open it is likely many more endorsements, names and faces will be popping up in the area to try and persuade you to part with your vote. Today is also the last day to register to vote, so unless you are registered you will not be able to take part! REGISTER TO VOTE BY CLICKING HERE TO VISIT gov.uk/register-to-vote
