A Wrexham Infant School has received glowing results in a recent inspection.

Johnstown Infant School on Melyd Avenue, has been judged as ‘Good’ following a ‘rigorous’ inspection by Estyn.

The school, which has 172 pupils aged three to seven years was inspected by Estyn, Her Majesty’s Inspectorate for Education and Training in Wales back in March 2014.

There are four ‘judgements’ that can be given to a school’s performance; excellent, good, adequate and unsatisfactory. A ‘good’ judgement means that the school has many strengths and no important areas requiring significant improvement.

Estyn notes that the school’s current performance is good because of the consistent teaching standards across the school, pupils behaviour in lessons and around the school; the quality and quantity of written work and the tracking of pupils progress.

The report goes on to comment on a number of areas in the school, including teaching, the learning environment, partnership working and resource management.

Overall the school received a judgement of ‘Good’ for all of Estyn’s findings. Writing about Care, Support and Guidance at the school, Estyn states: “Johnstown Infants School is a very caring and welcoming community where staff place a high emphasis on the wellbeing of pupils. Nearly all pupils show high levels of respect, care and concern for others. As a result, almost all pupils exhibit exemplary behaviour.”

With regards to the school’s learning experiences, Estyn notes: “The school provides a broad range of learning experiences, which are often imaginative, and interest and engage pupils well.

“The school offers a range of after school clubs, such as cricket club, gardening club and a basketball club. These enrich pupils learning experiences and promote self-esteem successfully. Educational visits together with visitors further enhance the curriculum.”

Speaking about the inspection, Headteacher Mrs Sandra Jones said: “This report is a testament to the quality and dedication of all our staff. I am delighted that they are given the recognition they deserve. I would have been surprised if it had been otherwise.’

“However it must not be forgotten that we could not work so efficiently without the marvellous support of our Governors, our Parents and the community in general. They give us every opportunity to do our best for the lovely children of the area.

“This is the most rigorous and thorough inspection we have undergone, so it is terrific to read this endorsement of every aspect of what we do.”
