Wrexham Lager x The Bank unique tasting experience launched

Wrexham.com for people living in or visiting the Wrexham area

A new tasting experience has been launched, for locals wishing to showcase local produce and skills as well as ‘a taste of community spirit’.

Since its birth in the late 1800’s, Wrexham Lager has been served in many top-class establishments and restaurants, both on land an at sea, often referred to as an “unsurpassable dinner beverage”, with the lager “effervescing like good champagne”. To this day, the local brewery continues to brew award winning lagers, in the heart of Wrexham, using traditional brewing methods, combined with cutting edge, modern technology.

The tasting notes explain how Head Chef at The Bank, lan Futter and Landlord Alex Jones, have paired the Wrexham Lager portfolio of lagers, with an exciting trio offood choices. Each mouth-watering dish has been prepared using local produce and compliments the three lagers in a way only The Bank could offer.

The Bank was the first ‘pub’ in the Wrexham town centre to serve Wrexham Lager, when the brewery was re-established by the Roberts family in 2011. Both local businesses are family run, so they say coming together to support each other in this way, feels like the perfect pairing, giving this unique menu notjust tastes of local produce, but also a taste of community spirit, by working together.

Wrexham Lager 4% is paired with a Truffle Mushroom Tart, a superb Welsh Pork Sausage Roll is paired with Wrexham Pilsener 4.6% – notably the malt used in this brew is a rare rediscovered
Bavarian Pilsener variety, which has just been recently regrown in limited quantities making it the most expensive malt to buy. It imparts a unique malty flavour and aroma to the beer which is complimented with a blend of German hops – with a tasting note that it “should be treated like a vintage port”.

The 5% Wrexham Export is unusually – but surprisingly fitting – Peruvian chicken tacos. The difference in the brewing technique gives this beer a “deceptively smooth and rounded palate for its strength” perhaps the reason why it fits well with the aji verde and pineapple pico.

Wrexham Lager invited Wrexham.com to try out the tasting paddles with the trio of lager matched with the food, and explained, “Wrexham Lager have been looking at ways that we can help attract tourism to Wrexham, not just on a Saturday, but anytime during the week and we feel that part of that should be unique experiences that you can’t get anywhere else.

The beers are presented on a custom continental style beer paddle, with literal Wrexham Lager branding, along with intricate matching images for each specific pour with a familiar historic landmark on show, “The custom wooden paddle boards have been created by a local business, and they have done an amazing job” – with the glassware also custom made to ensure the ‘champagne’ style fizz showcases the lager at its best.

The chef explained links with the Welsh Truffle Co, adding, “We have a mix of wild mushrooms for the tart, chestnut portobello and enoki – which are deep fried on the top. So earthy flavours that works really well with beers, but especially well with Wrexham Lager. The welsh pork and leek sausage roll has caramelised onion ketchup as well as an onion flavoured crackling on the top of it as well. The leeks are braised in Wrexham Lager as well!”

Everyone will have heard of Wrexham Lager, with the 4% lager described as ‘smooth drinking beer, you can have it again and again’. The pilsner product was described as a more premium product, ” We use all German imported malt for that, it is brewed in a german built brewhouse as well, which is state of the art. One of the main things, as a sort of benchmark on quality is a lot of breweries will do conditioning for two weeks maximum. We will condition our lager for at least four to six weeks, and really the longer you leave it, the better it is!” (lager is german for ‘warehouse’).

There was some speculation if the specially branded beer paddles would become available for sale – as they are likely to become a must have for the proverbial ‘man caves’ worldwide as is Wrexham Lager glassware (you can buy glasses online here if you are in the UK!).

You can try the tasting experience for £18 on Tuesday / Wednesday / Thursday all day or Saturday / Sunday lunchtimes at The Bank on the corner of High St / Church Street (LL13 8HY) by St Giles church – with the lager brewed just around 218 meters away at Wrexham Lager on St Georges Crescent (LL13 8DB)
