A major development featuring a new supermarket and drive-thru coffee shop is set to begin later this year after councillors gave their support to

Planning committee members voted unanimously in favour of the reserved matters application on land adjacent to the A483 at Ruabon Business Park.

The Aldi supermarket, Costa Coffee and Kay Group filling station form part of a multi-million redevelopment of the site, which includes more than 300 houses, a hotel and a restaurant.

Speaking at Monday’s meeting, the agent for the joint applicants explained that works on the “significant investment in Ruabon” would begin in autumn.

Cllr Joan Lowe, who represents Ruabon and Penycae South, said that the company has been in consultation with Ruabon Community Council throughout the process.

She added: “We did have some reservations about highways matters and these have been worked through and we are now happy with those.

“If you see the roundabout proposed, the miners wheel on that is quite a landmark. The community council did have some concerns but working with the company we have come up with a scheme and Aldi are going to sponsor the roundabout and maintain it.

“As a community that is a real plus. The wheel is a gateway going down the Dee Valley.”

The reserved matters application was backed unanimously by planning committee members.
