Vandals using glue target Wrexham pedestrian crossing

A pedestrian crossing in Wrexham has been taken out of action on at least three occasions after vandals used glue on the push button.

Issues with the crossing on Grosvenor Road in the city centre were first highlighted in April by local councillor Marc Jones.

In a post on Facebook, Cllr Jones said “persistent vandalism” had caused the problems, describing the situation as “inconvenient and dangerous”.

He said: “Sad to say that a lot of the problems happening with the Grosvenor Road pedestrian crossing are being caused by persistent vandalism – more than likely by the same person as it’s a very specific form of vandalism.

“If anyone has CCTV of the area, can you please get in touch as it’s costing the council money to fix the problem and – it goes without saying – is inconvenient and dangerous for people trying to cross. This is particularly the case for the elderly, infirm and children.”

Wrexham.com has since requested information from Wrexham Council to find out the cause of the issues.

An FOI response shows that a total of eight faults have been reported with the crossing since July 2022.

Three incidents involving glue being put on the push button have been reported between February and April this year.

While Cllr Jones said the vandalism was costing the council money, the response notes that the push buttons have either been repaired on site or replaced from stores and not incurred any costs

Additional commentary provided by the local authority as part of the response states: “All traffic signal faults are reported to Telent, our North Wales term maintenance contractor for traffic signals.

“All works are logged within our fault management system and comments made by the on-site engineer.

“A total of eight faults have been reported since July 2022 of which three faults are confirmed/very likely vandalism or inference with the push buttons and highlighted in yellow.”
