Temporary changes to rail services between Shrewsbury and Wrexham will start on Saturday.

Network Rail will be carrying out essential improvement work to the Grade II listed Cefn Mawr viaduct which will affect services between Shrewsbury and Wrexham.

From Saturday 24 August to Sunday 1 September trains will be diverted and will not run between Shrewsbury and Wrexham General. This will result in some trains starting and terminating at Shrewsbury.

However buses will run between Shrewsbury and Wrexham General and will stop at all stations.

The route will return to normal working by 01.00 (1AM) on 2nd September.

The Arriva Trains Wales website states that the changes will form “Part of a larger scheme in the area which will lead to shorter journey times between North and South Wales in the future.”

Listed below are routes that will be affected while work begins on the route:

  • Instead of running between Shrewsbury and Wrexham, all trains will be diverted via Chester and Crewe.
  • Rail replacement buses will run between Shrewsbury and Wrexham General calling at Gobowen, Chirk and Ruabon. These will run at different times to the usual train service. Please refer to the planned service alterations posters at stations on this route.
  • There will be shuttle trains between Wrexham and Chester running approximately hourly. Please refer to the planned service alterations posters at stations on this route.
  • Most Holyhead to Birmingham services will leave Chester a few minutes earlier than the normal timetable but will generally run as normal from Shrewsbury to Birmingham. Please refer to the planned service alterations posters at stations on this route.
  • The 0533 Holyhead to Cardiff Premier service will run later than the normal timetable from Chester to Cardiff arriving in Cardiff approximately 35 minutes after the normal time. Please refer to the planned service alterations posters at stations on this route.
