Several weeks of disruption on Croesnewydd Road as major gas upgrade planned

Wrexham.com for people living in or visiting the Wrexham area

Wales & West Utilities will shortly begin work to upgrade gas pipes in the Croesnewydd Road area.

The population will be aware of this as the road closure has been promoted in expensive adverts in the back of a newspaper, a move that Welsh Conservatives and Plaid Cymru teamed up to back as value for money and a subsidy for a specific legacy business sector in Wales.

Bizarrely rather than continue to communicate in that clearly optimum manner for on what will make up the traffic order, Wales and West are now communicating to you digitally.

The notice, placed in the Leader (Wrexham edition has an average circulation of just 1,860 copies now) is as below:

Wrexham County Borough Council intends to make a TEMPORARY (PROHIBITION OF THROUGH TRAFFIC) ORDER under Section 14(1) of the Road Traffic Regulation Act 1984 effective from 2nd September 2024 prohibiting any vehicle from using that length of Croesnewydd Road, Wrexham from a point 80m north-west of its junction with Dolydd Road, in a north westerly direction to its junction with the roundabout with Rhyd Broughton Lane for a distance of 534m to enable Wales and West Utilities to replace the gas mains in the carriageway.

Traffic is permitted to travel in a south-easterly direction, in line with the temporary one-way system.

The alternative route for vehicles affected by the closure is via Watery Road, A5152 Bradley Road, A541 Central Road, A541 Mold Road, B5101 Berse Road, and Rhyd Broughton Lane, which will be signposted accordingly. Pedestrian access will be maintained throughout the period of closure.

The prohibition is expected to last for 8 weeks, or until completion of the works if earlier, with a maximum duration of 18 months.

The works will begin on 2 September and – barring any engineering difficulties – will finish during November.

During the works there will be a road closure in place along Croesnewyedd Road, starting from the roundabout at Rhyd Broughton Lane to Ty Powys Nursing Home.

A local diversion route will be clearly signposted and will take motorists along Bradley Road, Regent Street, Mold Road, Berse Road and Rhyd Brougton Lane.

Croesnewydd Road will be closed in sections to allow residents access.

Wales & West Utilities Adam Smith, who is managing the gas pipe upgrade work said: “We know that working in areas like this is not ideal, but it really is essential to make sure we keep the gas flowing to homes and businesses in the area, and to make sure the gas network is fit for the future.

“We’ll have a team of gas engineers on site throughout the project to make sure our work is completed as safely and as quickly as possible while keeping disruption to a minimum.

“While most of the gas network is underground and out of sight, it plays a central role in the daily lives of people across Wrexham.

“Whether it’s heating your home, making the family dinner or having a hot bath, we understand how important it is for your gas supply to be safe and reliable and there when you need it.

“This work is essential to keep the gas flowing to local homes and businesses today, and to make sure the gas network is ready to transport hydrogen and biomethane, so we can all play our part in a green future.”

They added that their Customer Service Team is ready to take your call if you have any questions about the work – you can contact them on freephone 0800 912 2999.
