A protest against the development of the Super Prison in Wrexham has taken place this morning.

As those who follow Wrexham.com on Twitter / Monitor our Twitter feed on the website, earlier this morning we tweeted that protesters had gathered outside the site of the Wrexham Super Prison – with some locking themselves to the gates of the site.

The protest is part of a week’s worth of ‘Action Against the North Wales Prison and Prison Industrial Complex’ – held by ‘Cape-Campaign.org’. There will also be a screening of a film called ‘Visions of Abolition’ at Saith Seren this evening.

In a poster on the cape-campaign website it notes: “The state are currently building Europe’s second biggest prison in Wrexham. It’s part of a bigger agenda of prison expansion and social control and must be resisted.

“We can slow and stop its construction and send a message to the industry that we will not stand by as are communities are incarcerated.”

Around a dozen protesters were seen at the site across the morning – however lorries were seen entering the prison site, despite the protesters aims stated above.

This is not the first time protesters have targeted the Wrexham Super Prison, with a separate group called ‘Reclaim the Fields’ seen campaigning outside the site in September.

Speaking about the protest taking place today, Supt Alex Goss said: “North Wales Police are aware that a group of protesters have gathered at North Wales Prison construction site in Pentre Maelor, Wrexham.

“We have a responsibility to allow peaceful protest and to maintain public order to ensure public safety and uphold the law.

“We are monitoring the situation and are in contact with all parties concerned and at this time the protest is being policed proportionately and appropriately.”
