Plans to modernise dated public toilets and introduce a 20p charge for use in Wrexham Town Centre are underway.

In proposals submitted by Wrexham Council it is recommended that old-fashioned public toilets on Henblas Street are upgraded and a 20p charge to use the facilities is introduced.

In January 2015 members of Wrexham’s Executive Board unanimously approved recommendations to begin upgrading toilet facilities in the town centre, starting with the female public conveniences on Henblas Street.

As a result of the recommendations the facilities at Bodhyfryd / Waterworld car park will also be closed and opening times of the Albion conveniences be varied as a result of the recommendations.

At present the toilets provide female only public toilets, however the upgrading of the facility will provide male and female toilets, a disabled toilet and an attendant room / small cleaners room.

The planning documents state: “The toilet conversion is contained within the structure of the existing toilet and will not affect the adjacent market stalls.

“Improvements will include the repointing of the brickwork and removal of weeds.”

The documents continue onto note that the new facility will be fitted with traditional toilets and basins and that flooring will consist of red and blue ceramic tiles.

Amongst the recommendations approved by councillors earlier this year was the introduction of a 20p fee to use the Henblas Street toilets, which would provide a toilet attendant for the facility.

Previously there have been concerns raised regarding anti social behaviour in public toilets in Wrexham, with some complaints also made regarding the overall cleanliness of the facilities. As a result a cleaner/attendant will also be appointed to staff the Henblas Street conveniences in a bid to deter anti social behaviour at the toilets.

This will be done via the introduction of a coin slot for access to the facility.

Alongside the proposals to upgrade the toilets an application for listed building consent for the facility has also been submitted, with the toilets, which form part of the General Market listed a Grade II building in 1985.

The proposals are anticipated to be discussed by Wrexham’s Planning Committee at a later date.
