A potential extension to Wrexham’s outdoor weekly market it being explored following suggestions it may help increase footfall in other parts of the town centre.

The suggestion to extend the Monday Market, which operates on Queen’s Street and Lord Street, was put forward in September’s Town Centre Forum as a way to increase footfall into Henblas Street.

The idea was mooted by Cllr Dana Davies, who said at last month’s meeting: “Are we looking at extending the market and extending down, if not reaching it down Henblas Street itself, if we can reach across the top just to influence a footfall or a pathway through that area?

“It would be better for the private shops too, if the footfall is there it is easier to negotiate.”

At the time Town Centre Manager Amanda Davies agreed extending the market could well be ‘easy and quick’ but a number of stakeholders would need to be consulted before such changes could be implemented.

An update on the situation was relayed to the Forum yesterday, with Amanda Davies noted that the plan is ‘trial an extension of the market’ and that there is a meeting with traders over the next few weeks, to knock together a working plan, subject to agreement from the traders.

She said: “The plan is to spread out the market more rather than relocate from the existing place. A lot of traders have been in the same position for many years.

Filling any gaps with new business was also highlighted, adding “There is always opportunity for new traders!”
