Plans To Tackle Derelict & Unsightly Shop Fronts in Town Centre Take Step Forward
Plans to encourage landlords to smarten up the shop fronts of long-term derelict properties in the town centre have taken a step forward.
Across the town centre there are a number of empty properties, some of which have remained vacant since their closure. Several of these have since been subject to fly posting or have had a deterioration in their general appearance.
The idea of tackling the issue was first mooted in the Town Centre Forum in September 2015, when plans to smarten up derelict shop fronts in the town were first outlined.
These plans were further expanded upon further in December 2015, when the then Conservative Party Assembly Candidate for Wrexham, Andrew Atkinson launched a campaign to contact the owners of properties in town which have been left to deteriorate.
The campaign involved encouraging Wrexham Council to write to landlords and property owners detailing the problems and asking them to undertake remedial works.
Speaking at this week’s Town Centre Forum, temporary Chairman Mr Atkinson noted that work on tackling shop fronts in had been ongoing for sometime and that a list of properties in the town centre and the defects had been completed.
Mr Atkinson said: “We now have an up to date database of who owns which property to keep nagging. We are all of the opinion that it can’t keep up, places like the old Burton are left boarded up with no attention.”
