A Wrexham parent has been found guilty of failing to ensure their child attended school regularly.

The parent, who cannot be identified, received a curfew and will be tagged for two months. This was the parent’s second similar prosecution in less than 12 months.

The case was heard in Wrexham Magistrates Court and was brought by Wrexham Council’s Education Social Work Service and the Authority’s Legal Department.

Cllr Mike Williams, Lead Member for Children’s Services and Education, said: “In Wrexham we want all our children to have positive aspirations and be able to learn and achieve their potential but unless they attend school this will not happen.

Parents have a duty to ensure they attend regularly and I am pleased the Education Social Work Service has brought, and will continue to bring prosecutions, against those who don’t live up to this responsibility.”

With the combined hard work of  the ESW Service, schools and parents last year Wrexham had the highest attendance figures it had ever achieved in both the Primary and Secondary sector. Also, the 2011 Welsh Government document “All Wales Attendance Framework” recognised the good work in Wrexham and included resources from Wrexham as an example of good practice throughout Wales.
