North Wales politician urging eligible adults to use flu vaccine drop-in clinics
A regional Member of the Senedd is urging eligible adults to call into a local venue and get a free flu vaccine.
Last week Betsi Cadwaladr University Health Board opened drop-in clinics across North Wales amid a rise in the number of patients being admitted to hospital with the virus.
Flu, along with covid-19 and other winter viruses, is circulating within communities across the region.
The Catrin Finch Centre, at Wrexham University, The Delph in Acrefair and Chirk Parish Hall will be offering the free drop-in clinics locally.
Mr Rowlands, who has a flu jab every year, said: “I am happy to promote the health board’s call for eligible people to be vaccinated and urge them to take advantage of this opportunity to ensure they protect themselves and others.
“I welcome any measures which will prevent people being admitted to hospital with flu which puts even more pressure on our hardworking NHS staff.
“These days more than ever people are very aware of the dangers of respiratory viral infection.
“Flu is bad enough on its own but for anyone who is unfortunate to catch both flu and Covid, the consequences could be very severe indeed.
“It is vital as many people as possible get protected, particularly those who are most vulnerable.
“Not only does this protect the individual but also protects our Welsh NHS.”
The best way to protect against flu is to get the vaccine. It can stop you getting flu, lessen the severity of symptoms if you do catch the virus, and reduce your chances of passing it on.
More than 270,000 people in North Wales have already boosted their protection against flu by getting the flu vaccine this winter.
The vaccination clinics will offer both the flu vaccine and COVID-19 Autumn booster throughout this month.
All eligible adults will be able to drop in to a clinic to receive the vaccines without an appointment. You can choose to receive one or both vaccines.
Those eligible for flu vaccination include:
- Those aged six months to 64 years in clinical risk groups
- Children aged two and three years on 31 August 2023
- Children in primary school from reception class to year 6
- Children in secondary school from year 7 to year 11
- People aged 65 years and older (age on 31 March 2024)
- Pregnant women
- Carers aged 16 and over
- Staff in nursing homes and care homes with regular client contact
- Frontline health and social care workers
