The new Member of Parliament for Montgomeryshire and Glyndwr has vowed to “deliver on his promises of returning prosperity to our constituency.”

Labour MP Steve Witherden, who has worked as a teacher in the area for 18 years, was elected at the count in Bulith Wells with 12,709 votes early this morning.

He is the first MP to represent the new Montgomeryshire and Glyndwr ward, which encompasses large parts of south Wrexham, Powys and mid-Wales.

Steve Witherden came out on top in a tightly fought battle, which saw independent candidate Craig Williams lose his seat and come in third after Reform UK.

Craig Williams had stood as a Conservative MP but lost support from the party amid allegations that he had a placed a bet on the date of the general election.

Early exit polls had indicated that Craig Williams would retain his seat.

However in the early hours of Friday morning MyWelshpool, which was live from the count, reported that it had become “apparent that a clear winner was emerging that would mirror the national story.”

In a statement released after his victory, Steve Witherden MP, said: “I am beyond humbled to have been elected Member of Parliament for Montgomeryshire and Glyndŵr – the first time Montgomeryshire has ever returned a Labour MP.

“I thank the voters for putting their trust in me and in the Labour Party to bring change to our constituency, and congratulate all candidates for a well-fought campaign.

“The hard work begins today. I will deliver on my promises of returning prosperity to our constituency, supporting small businesses and farmers, working with Labour governments in Westminster and Cardiff to improve cross-border healthcare and drive down waiting lists, while investing in green energy and safeguarding our countryside.

“People in every corner of our constituency have put their trust in me to be a representative for Montgomeryshire and Glyndŵr in all its diversity.”
