Local MPs “honoured” to attend civic service to mark Wrexham being awarded city status
The Members of Parliament for Wrexham and Clwyd South have said they were “honoured” to attend a civic service to celebrate Wrexham being awarded city status.
On Saturday 1st October, Member of Parliament for Clwyd South, Simon Baynes MP and Sarah Atherton MP attended the ceremony at St. Giles’ Parish Church to see the Royal Charter presented by the Vice Lord Lieutenant of Clwyd, Lloyd Fitzhugh, from Her late Majesty Queen Elizabeth II.
They were joined by the Mayor of Wrexham, Cllr Brian Cameron and Deputy Mayor of Wrexham Cllr Paul Rogers.
During the service, the Leader of Wrexham County Borough Council, Cllr Mark Pritchard, made a speech in accepting the City Charter and the Rhos Orpheus Male Choir gave a special performance.
Sarah Atherton MP said: “Last weekend’s service was a historic and memorable event, allowing us all to come together and celebrate this great achievement for Wrexham.
“It is safe to say that the excitement surrounding city status has not diminished and I will always be grateful to Her late Majesty Queen Elizabeth II for recognising Wrexham’s potential, ambition, and contribution to our Union.
“Cllr Mark Pritchard’s powerful speech, in which he accepted the city charter, coupled with the beautiful voices of the Orpheus Male Choir is a special memory I will treasure for life.
“I am excited to embrace all the opportunities that will come Wrexham’s way.”
Simon Baynes said: “All in all, this was a very special and historic service of celebration of a great achievement for Wrexham.
“Cllr Mark Pritchard made an impressive speech in accepting the City Charter and the Rhos Orpheus Male Choir sang beautifully.
“The Rev. Dr Jason Bray gave a wonderful sermon which perfectly described the rich history, culture and communities of Wrexham Borough and County.
“I was honoured to attend.”
