Labour councillor selected as Police Crime Commissioner election candidate

Welsh Labour has selected Flintshire County Councillor Andy Dunbobbin to be its candidate for North Wales Police and Crime Commissioner in the upcoming election in May.

Cllr Dunbobbin, who is also the Flintshire Armed Forces Champion, represents Golftyn ward in Connah’s Quay.

Police and Crime Commissioners replaced local police authorities in 2012, they is responsible for holding the Chief Constable and police force to account on the public’s behalf.

They also oversee how crime is tackled in their area and aim to make sure the police are providing a good service.

The role includes, meeting the public regularly to listen to their views on policing, producing a police and crime plan setting out local policing priorities, deciding how the budget will be spent and appointing Chief Constables and dismissing them if needed.

Cllr Dunbobbin said: Voters across North Wales have the opportunity to elect a Welsh Labour Police and Crime Commissioner who will work for safer communities for all.

“It is people like us who the Police Crime Commissioner is accountable to.

“A fresh pair of eyes. Someone who is not afraid to challenge, nor to be challenged. 

“With that in mind, I would hold frequent engagement events across the whole of our North Wales community.

“From Village fetes to Government meetings – I want you to know that I am always here to listen, support and action anything of your concern.”

Cllr Dunbobbin said his key election pledges will be based on, “more visible policing, greater value for money, stronger cooperation with the Chief Constable and officers to make North Wales a safer place to live.”

He added: “Having, lived, studied and worked in North Wales my whole life, I have a deep understanding of the issues and challenges we all currently face in our communities.

I also know that the landscape of politics has changed over the last few years.

“Heavily involved with our Armed Forces community, I am Flintshire’s  Armed Forces Champion. I have led the Council in achieving the Defence Employer Recognition Scheme (ERS) gold award. 

Cllr Dunbobbin said he, “hopes to meet as many of you as possible over the coming weeks ahead to hear what you feel is needed from North Wales Police.”

The Police and Crime Commissioner elections take place on May 7th.

Current Police and Crime Commissioner Arfon Jones (Plaid Cymru) will be standing for re-election, no other parties have announced candidates to date.
