Wrexham County Borough Council, in partnership with Johnstown Bowling Club and Rhos Community Council, has successfully obtained grants from Cory Environmental Trust in Britain (CETB) and WREN.

These two landfill tax grants will fund the replacement of existing Club portacabins and create a new brick building for the whole community.

CETB has offered a grant of £75,000 and WREN £44,000 for the project. Rhos Community Council and Johnstown Bowling Club are also supporting the project financially.

Chairman of Johnstown Bowls Club Kevin Stevenson said he was delighted to receive the majority grant funding from CETB and WREN. He also thanked members of Rhos Community Council and Wrexham Council for their support. This will enhance the local area and will support the community.

The aim of the project is to build a new community building which can be used by the Club and other members of Johnstown community. A variety of groups and individuals will be able to use the rooms, once the building is completed late next summer.

Councillor David A Bithell, Lead Member for the Environment and Public Protection, said: “This is great news that we have obtained significant funding from CETB and WREN to create a new community building. Johnstown Bowls Club has been very successful in recent years and this year hosted the Welsh Merit final, which is a credit to the club’s achievements. The new building will enable us to offer the facilities to other local users and local schools. A lot of work still needs to be done to make this happen and we are working with the Club and local community to achieve our objective.”
