Wrexham looks set for more murals and instagramable items as the council are progressing with plans to create a football heritage trail that will dovetail with a photo trail that will also be launched.

Cllr Nigel Williams, Lead Member for Economy and Regeneration, told Wrexham.com, “Discussions have taken place over recent weeks with several partners with the view to developing a well interpreted photo-opportunity trail related in-part to football around the City Centre. This will be based on joining-up the iconic places around the city centre with historic, cultural or sporting significance.

“Rather than rushing this, we’re working with partners such as the football club, our tourism partnership and Visit Wales so that we have official endorsement and cross-promotion of the trail. It is coming, but it’s important that we get the balance between acting fast and having a really good trail with interpretation and marketing of it.

“In the meantime, for the current wave of new visitors and the increasing numbers expected over the summer months and well into 2024 – we’re working on itineraries with Visit Wales and inbound travel partners to increase the length of stay in Wrexham, largely based on promoting a wide range of things to do and see whilst staying here. There are weekly meetings with new interested marketing partners and this should extend the appeal of Wrexham to a number of markets.

“We acknowledge the high level of interest in Wrexham right now, but there’s high confidence that this will also continue over the next few years, thanks to a further ‘Welcome to Wrexham’ documentary launching later in the year and our own various overseas marketing campaigns that we’re working with Welsh Government on to promote the wider County.

“Our Placemaking work will launch additional tourism products this summer – with a new comprehensive Wrexham tourism brochure due to be launched next month alongside an online Wrexham Tourism Ambassador Scheme to support local businesses.

“In addition to all of this, our museum is also creating a new more in-depth football heritage trail for the city which will be of interest to both locals and tourists to the area. This trail will be connected to the development of The new Football Museum for Wales. A lot of research work has been put in to this to date but this trail will follow later in the year and dovetail with the photo trail launching ahead of this.

“Finally, with the new City of Culture board having been established – visitors to Wrexham should also see the 2025 City of Culture bid signage being replaced over the coming months as we look ahead to 2029.”
