Hundreds sign petition calling for resurfacing of a notorious and “dangerous” stretch of road

Hundreds of residents have signed a petition calling for the urgent resurfacing of a notorious and “dangerous” stretch of road.

Gwersyllt West Councillor Annette Davies launched the petition last week (Thursday 25 July) after claims that repeated attempts to get Wrexham Council to resurface Summerhill Road had been rejected.

More than 800 people have now signed the petition, which is available online and in local shops.

Amongst the signatories are staff and visitors to Pendine Park, the largest care complex in north Wales, which is located on Summerhill Road.

Residents have branded the stretch of road as “dangerous” and “unsafe”, with some claiming they are being forced to drive on the other side of the street to avoid the damage.

Cllr Davies has also written to Wrexham Council’s lead member for environment, Cllr Terry Evans, requesting a meeting with himself and senior officers.

In her letter Cllr Davies said it has been “deeply frustrating to see roads with fewer potholes and in better condition in the borough being resurfaced to a good standard while Summerhill Road is patched, and re-patched time after time.”

She adds: “This is no longer a technical matter of how deep the potholes are as many of the residents who have signed the petition in the past three days have said it’s a health and safety risk as drivers frequently swerve or drive on the wrong side of the road to avoid the holes and uneven surfaces.

“It’s only a matter of time before we have a serious accident due to the state of the surface

“Many residents tell me that they avoid this road because of the dangerous state it is in which puts more pressure on the Mold Road alternative.

“I would like to invite you and highways officers to see for yourselves the state of the road at your earliest convenience so we can try and move this forward. I can then present the petition to you.”

In a statement last week a spokesperson for Wrexham Council said: “We are aware of the condition of this particular road and the problems it is causing to drivers in the area.

“Like all other highway authority areas we have significant funding pressures for our road infrastructure and we are unable to address all the repairs the county’s roads are in need of.

“We are however hopeful that this particular road will be included in this year’s work programme which will be published in the near future.”

The online petition can be signed here and there are paper petitions available in local shops.
