Humphrey Ker set to run Manchester Marathon to raise funds for Wrexham Miners Project

Wrexham AFC say they are “delighted” to name The Wrexham Miners Project as their Charitable partner for the 24/25 Season.

As readers will be well aware, Wrexham Miners Project is a local charity that works to preserve the history of Wrexham’s mining community and breathe new life into the Miners Rescue Station, an historic Wrexham building, transforming it into a museum, community hub and educational centre – that was literally criminally neglected and almost lost.

The charity is raising funds to restore the much-damaged building to its former glory and to support and expand the wealth of community activities that take place at the Station.

Mining and Wrexham AFC have always been inextricably linked and never more so than in the aftermath of the Gresford Colliery Disaster in 1934, when 266 men were killed, a great many of them Wrexham fans. This season, the Club’s shirts have the number 266 and a representation of the Gresford Colliery wheel on the nape of the neck, in remembrance.

Now, on the 90th Anniversary of the Disaster, the Club say they are delighted to “do our part to support this vital work for both Wrexham’s past and future. With many fans, and fan groups, asking the Club for ways that they can help both the Club and the local community, financially, Wrexham AFC Community Trust has set up a JustGiving page, with all of the funds raised going to The Wrexham Miners Project”.

To get the fundraising ball rolling, Chairmen Rob McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds have pledged £26,200 each, to the fund, if Executive Director Humphrey Ker will run the Manchester Marathon in April of 2025.

“I can’t really think of anything I would like to do less,” said Ker, “as my principle form of exercise is walking to the petrol station to buy a snickers ice cream, but the opportunity to secure these funds for The Wrexham Miners Project was too good to turn down. I have bought a pair of trainers and a huge vat of anti-chafing cream. If anyone feels inspired by the Chairmen’s generosity, all donations gratefully received. £2.62, £26.20, £262 – no amount too large or small.”
