“High visibility” security officers to patrol Wrexham city centre

Security officers are being trained to provide a “high visibility presence” in Wrexham city centre.

Wrexham Council say that the officials have been introduced to provide assurance to the “increasing visitors” in Wrexham.

As part of their role the security officers will enforce the current Public Space Protection Order (PSPO).

Amongst some of its conditions, the PSPO:

  • Prohibits individuals consuming alcohol in the city centres public areas, or be in possession of an open container of alcohol.
  • Requires individuals to surrender or dispose of anything in the person’s possession believed to be alcohol or a container for alcohol.
  • Prohibits individuals behaving in a manner that is likely to cause harassment, alarm, nuisance or distress to others.

The new roles come after Wrexham Council removed the funding the authority contributed towards four PCSOs due to ongoing budget cuts.

There is also uncertainty about future funding of CCTV and antisocial behaviour deterrents after the future of a £20 million Towns Fund was put at risk.

Cllr Paul Roberts, Lead Member for Partnerships and Community Safety, explained the increased patrols will “complement the existing resources of Wrexham Police who regularly patrol the city centre.”

Cllr Nigel Williams, Lead Member for Economy, added: “After listening to feedback from city centre businesses, I am pleased that we are introducing high visibility patrols like these will provide. We’re here to support everyone to make sure they enjoy their experience in the city centre.”

City Centre Inspector, Heidi Stokes, said, “The anti-social behaviour in our city is not welcomed. The increased patrols from WCBC to enforce the existing council led Public Space Protection Order is a great step-forward to tackle the issue.

“North Wales Police continue to support our colleagues in Wrexham County Borough Council to ensure the city centre is a welcoming and safe place to live, work and visit.”

The PSPO enforcement began on 7 September.
