Major city centre regeneration works that will see significant changes made to the High Street, Yorke Street, Town Hill and Abbot Street are well underway.

The work programme will see new green spaces, trees planting plus further pedestrianise the four streets.

After the ripping up of old street surfaces the installation of the new paving blocks and granite kerbing is well underway on sections of the works, which once complete will be open to allow the other areas of work to progress.

All regeneration works are expected to be completed by 25 October 2024 with Town Hill expected to reopen early next month at the latest.

Councillor Nigel Williams, Wrexham Council’s Lead Member for Economy, previously said: “We’re really excited to see the plans for High Street and the immediate surroundings come to life – continuing our commitment to investing and enhancing our city centre so it provides the best possible experience for businesses, residents and visitors.”

“We appreciate that this is a busy area of the city and we apologise in advance for any temporary disruption caused.

“The Contractor will be working as safely, efficiently and to the highest standards in order to complete the works as soon as possible.

As part of the works seven trees were removed on Yorke St, however the plan is to plan 16 ‘large’ trees on Town Hill, Yorke Street and the High Street.

The council said of the old and new trees, “The seven trees are young and of mixed species planted in an informal, ad-hoc scheme. All efforts will be made to transplant the root balls of these trees to other, more suitable locations. The new trees will be of more suitable species and planted to provide a more formal, uniform appearance; more in-keeping with the desired improvements to the High Street and Yorke Street.”

“The trees will be planted in load-bearing, structured cell planting pits which will provide a better rooting environment and one more conducive to healthy root development without any risk of future ground disturbance. The new trees will be between 5 and 7 metres high when planted”.

Yorke Street will have six upright growing Oaks planted and the planting High Street and Town Hill will consist of Whitebeam, Hornbeam, Elm, Ginko, Honey Locust Cherry and Evergreen Oak.
