A Wrexham-based playgroup has been awarded a Golden Grant to rollout healthy activities and nutritious food to children.

Bellevue Playgroup, based in Bellevue Park has received £5,000 as part of the Tesco Stronger Starts, £5million grant programme.

The funding is used to help schools and children’s groups provide nutritious food and healthy activities that support young people’s physical health and mental wellbeing, such as breakfast clubs or snacks, and equipment for healthy activities.

The Bellevue Playgroup, which already has a focus on outdoor play, will use the funds to purchase a substantial outdoor all weather shed to store the equipment they use for their outdoor play.

Helen McCarthy, Manager at Bellevue Playgroup said: “Being able to purchase the shed will make such a difference to our outdoor play provision.

“Our current storage situation is not ideal with limited space and infiltrated by the elements.

“We are extremely grateful that we were lucky enough to be selected for the Golden Grant in the Wrexham store”.

The grants are administered by Groundwork UK with Groundwork North Wales looking after the scheme for the North Wales area.

Alison Roberts, Community Champion at Tesco Wrexham, said:“It is fantastic that we can support a local project with such a sum of money.

“We have had a fantastic visit to Bellevue Playgroup this morning and you can see that the healthy outdoor activities the playgroup undertake to support the children’s physical health and mental wellbeing are a key feature in the Bellevue Playgroup provision’.

The Tesco Stronger start scheme is open for applications throughout the year, with panels sitting quarterly to decide which project goes to the vote in store. You can find out more about the scheme, and how to apply by visiting the Groundwork North Wales website.
