Five community groups across Wrexham have received a funding boost to help get them set for a sports filled summer holidays.

The Summer Sports Fund, allocated by the North Wales Police and Crime Commissioner Andy Dunbobbin, aims to empower children and young people and help to combat antisocial behaviour.

The Commissioner allocated £25,000 to support the projects with the focus being on empowering and developing children and young people and combating anti-social behaviour.

26 organisations across the region have benefited from a share of £25,000, including five community groups in Wrexham. These include:

  • Gwenfro Valley Adventure Playground, Wrexham
  • FC United of Wrexham – Empowering Youth through Summer Futsal at FC United of Wrexham
  • Clwb Rygbi Rhos, Wrexham – Summer Outreach
  • Palops United C.I.C., Wrexham – Summer of fun and sport for children and young people
  • Canolfan Ceirog Centre, Glyn Ceiriog – Summer Sports and Activities

The Summer Sports Fund was originally launched in early June with the aim of encouraging clubs and youth organisations to apply for a grant to pay for sporting activities throughout the summer break.

Antisocial behaviour can often spike over the summer months and the aim of the project is that by keeping children and young people occupied in a positive way, we can promote teamwork, exercise, and a fun and inclusive atmosphere for everyone.

“I am delighted to have awarded funding to clubs and groups right across our region,” said North Wales Police and Crime Commissioner Andy Dunbobbin

“I was really pleased by the response to my Summer Sports Fund and impressed by the dedication and commitment these clubs have for sport and the community involvement they all showed.

“As PCC for North Wales, my focus is on supporting our communities and providing opportunities for young people, while also helping to reduce the potential for ASB.

“Last year I launched a Summer Soccer Fund focussed on football, which saw enormous success and, this year, I was keen to extend the scheme to a wider variety of sports to make it as inclusive as possible for young people.

“This year’s Summer Sports Fund is an excellent way to reduce the potential for anti-social behaviour by giving clubs and organisations the platform to host worthwhile activities for young people, in turn fostering a safe and accepting environment for all.

“With the holidays starting and the Paris Olympics just around the corner, I’m looking forward to seeing these exciting Summer Sports Fund activities underway over the summer and to seeing the fun and joy they bring to young people from across North Wales.”
