Four city centre streets to undergo major refurb and pedestrianisation
Major works to create new green spaces, plant trees and pedestrianise four city centre streets are set to get underway.
The regeneration will see significant changes made to the High Street, Yorke Street, Town Hill and Abbot Street.
These include the installation of new paving blocks and granite kerbing – along with the creation of green spaces and tree planting.
New street furniture will also be installed to help boost local hospitality businesses.
One of the biggest changes is the pedestrianisation of Yorke Street, High Street, Town Hill and Abbot Street.
There had been concerns about the impact removing traffic access this could have on local businesses.
However Wrexham Council have confirmed the plans will press ahead.
Alun Griffiths Contractors Ltd have been appointed by to deliver the environmental improvements to Wrexham City Centre.
The first stage of the works will be starting this week on Yorke Street and Town Hill on Monday, 1 July.
All regeneration works are expected to be completed by 25 October 2024.
Councillor Nigel Williams, Wrexham Council’s Lead Member for Economy, said: “We’re really excited to see the plans for High Street and the immediate surroundings come to life – continuing our commitment to investing and enhancing our city centre so it provides the best possible experience for businesses, residents and visitors.”
Potential disruption
A Wrexham Council spokesperson confirmed that disruption will be minimised as much as possible, with the main route remaining open to traffic and pedestrian access retained in all streets.
Town Hill and Abbot Street will have to be closed to vehicular traffic for certain periods whilst they are resurfaced due to the limited width.
Pedestrian access will be maintained.
The spokesperson said: “Measures will be in place to minimise disruption to businesses during this period including providing porters by the Contractor to support businesses with deliveries and Alun Griffiths Public Liaison Officer will pop by to discuss these details.
“In order to carry out the necessary works as safely as possible, Town Hill will need to be closed to vehicular traffic from 1 July, reopening in early September 2024.
“Pedestrian access will be maintained and businesses will be supported with their deliveries. with businesses on Town Hill and York Street – if you would like to get in touch then please see our project contact details: Email: [email protected] Telephone: 0330 041 2185.
“The Contractors working hours will be between 7:30am and 6pm Monday to Friday and should weekend working be necessary, 9am until 1pm on Saturdays.
“There are currently no plans to work weekends and the Contractor will not be working during the August Bank Holiday.
“We appreciate that this is a busy area of the city and we apologise in advance for any temporary disruption caused.
“The Contractor will be working as safely, efficiently and to the highest standards in order to complete the works as soon as possible.
