Five public spaces in Wrexham have been recognised with a prestigious Green Flag status.

Wrexham Cemetery, Tŷ Mawr, Alyn Waters, Bellevue and Ponciau Park each received the international mark of a quality park or green space.

Flags are awarded for areas that have excellent visitor facilities, high environmental standards and commitment to delivery great quality green space.

The Green Flag Award programme is delivered in Wales by environmental charity Keep Wales Tidy, with support from Welsh Government.

Independent green space experts volunteered their time to judge applicant sites against eight strict criteria, including biodiversity, cleanliness, environmental management, and community involvement.

The five spaces across Wrexham were amongst 291 across Wales to receive the prestigious status.

Cllr Terry Evans, Lead Member for the Environment, said, “It’s great to hear this news and thanks must go to the staff and volunteers who are committed to ensuring the quality of our green spaces remains of a high quality.

“Our parks and open spaces provide valuable areas of natural beauty and we are committed to protect and maintain them to ensure they can continue to be used by people of all ages to enjoy and appreciate the beautiful surroundings we in Wrexham have on our doorstep.”

Lucy Prisk, Green Flag Coordinator for Keep Wales Tidy said: “We’re thrilled to see 291 green spaces in Wales achieving the prestigious Green Flag status, which is testament to the dedication and hard work of hundreds of staff and volunteers.

“Quality green spaces play a vital role in the physical and mental well-being of people across Wales, and to be recognised as among the best in the world is a huge achievement – Congratulations!”

Keep Wales Tidy are always on the lookout for new places to join the Green Flag Awards. If you’d like to put your park or green space on the map, visit the Keep Wales Tidy website for more information.
