Emergency Repairs to Cemetery Chapel Roofs
Work has begun on carrying out emergency repairs to the rear roofs of the twin Chapels at a Wrexham Cemetery.
The Wrexham Cemetery, which is located on Ruabon Road is to benefit from a regeneration with emergency repairs being carried out to the chapel roof.
A bid to revamp the cemetery was submitted to The Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) in January 2014 to help restore and conserve the grounds of the chapel and Victorian Cemetery.
The Chapel, which is a Grade 11 listed building was designed by borough surveyor William Turner, with the grounds landscaped by local horticulturalist and politician yeoman Strachan.
The first burial at the cemetery took place in April 1876 of local girl Ethel Irene, aged just eleven years old.
The work to the grade II listed building, which is included on the Buildings at Risk Register, will prevent further deterioration of the building fabric in preparation for the Heritage Lottery Funded restoration work on the buildings due to begin next year.
The emergency repairs have been part funded by Cadw and should take around 6 weeks to complete. We apologise for any disruption to visitors to the cemetery, during the works.
Councillor David Bithell, Lead Member, Environment and Transport said: “I am very pleased the emergency repair work is being carried out to help secure the buildings in preparation for the Heritage Lottery Funded restoration works next year. I am grateful for Cadw for their financial support for the project.”
