A notoriously “dangerous” stretch of road in Gwersyllt is set to be resurfaced after more than 1,000 residents signed a petition calling for action.

Gwersyllt West councillor Annette Davies launched the campaign last month after claims that repeated attempts to get Wrexham Council to resurface Summerhill Road had been rejected.

According to Cllr Davies numerous patching had made the road surface dangerous for road users and many signed saying they now avoided the road because it was so uneven.

More than 1,100 local residents signed the petition, with many branding it as “dangerous” and “unsafe.

Now it has been confirmed that Wrexham Council will resurface large parts of the stretch of road.

Work is due to start on 19 August on the Summerhill Road at Little Mountain and then for a week from 6 September by the Lex Football Club.

Plaid Cymru’s Cllr Davies, said: “I’ve been calling for this work to be done for more than two years and, as recently as last month, Gwersyllt Community Council was told that there was no funding for a proper resurfacing job.

“That’s why I launched the petition – to show the council how frustrated local residents and people accessing Pendine Park had become.

“The response – more than 1100 in just over a week – was astounding.

“So many people talked of near misses, damage to cars, danger to cyclists and motorcyclists that it was clear something had to be done.

“The news is a huge relief for us all. I’m delighted there’s been a change of heart.

“It is, however, very frustrating that we have to resort to this when its blindingly obvious that the road is dangerous.

“I hope the work, which is due to start on one stretch later this month, will make the road safe and usable again.”
