Erddig Councillor Paul Roberts has been elected as Leader of the Conservative Group on Wrexham Council.

Cllr Roberts takes over the role from Cllr Hugh Jones, the previous long standing Leader of the Group, who has ‘retired’ from the role.

Cllr Roberts told us, “Following Cllr Hugh Jones decision to retire from the position of Group Leader I was successful in being nominated as the new Group Leader”.

We asked if there were any changes due for the Executive Board line up, where the Conservatives hold seats, with Cllr Roberts noting “Wrexham Council Leader Cllr Mark Pritchard assigns all portfolios to the Lead Members”.

As we reported earlier this year Cllr Roberts had left the Executive Board, with no explanations or statements at the time.

Council Leader Mark Pritchard later confirmed to us last month he was ‘doing the work’ from Cllr Roberts in the interim period, and was expecting nominations from the Conservatives on who takes the vacant seat at the Full Council meeting this month.

Full Council will be held on Wednesday afternoon in the Guildhall with a report before councillors notes “Section 5 of the Council’s Constitution states that the Executive Board will consist of the Leader of the Council and at least two, but not more than nine other Councillors who will be appointed by the Council”.

Adding, “There is a vacancy on Executive Board and Members are therefore requested to appoint a nominated Councillor for the vacancy.”

The nomination will likely be made verbally, and would likely see the return of Cllr Roberts.
