Celebrating Volunteers Week In Wrexham
The Association of Voluntary Organisations in Wrexham (AVOW) arranged the annual Volunteers Week celebration last Saturday 1st June 2013, in Queen’s Square, Wrexham to celebrate Volunteers Week and highlight AVOW’s 25th Anniversary.
The event was an opportunity for various organisations to promote a wide range of services that are available from the third sector across Wrexham County Borough. They provided information about children, older people, environmental and historical projects.
The Mayor of Wrexham Councillor I David Bithell MBE and the Mayoress opened the event and thanked all of the volunteers and representatives from the groups for the dedicated service that they provided which benefited Wrexham County Borough and encouraged more people to become involved in volunteering.
The public were entertained by local children and young people from Bitesize Theatre; Tom Hughes Lloyd who has recently appeared on Sky’s “Got to Dance” gave a demonstration of body poppin’ dance (assisted by Ollie the AVOW mascot). Laura Gallagher, Koutha Newman, Tom Hughes Lloyd and David Jekyll sang a variety of songs to round off the day.
The AVOW Play Team celebrated “National Hopscotch Day” by playing the game with visitors. The game was once popular on our streets yet sadly is now very rarely seen. In addition they made “junk” into play equipment.
John Gallanders, Chief Officer of AVOW, said: “We would like to thank the Mayor and Mayoress for their continued support for the voluntary and community sector in Wrexham and in particular the members of the general public who supported the event.
” During our 25th Anniversary year we are highlighting things that are MAD – “Make a Difference” and we are collecting donations throughout the year for the MAD Fund, which will be then distributed to local communities and voluntary groups that want to make a difference in their respective areas.”
