A team of volunteers will take to the streets of Wrexham town centre this weekend to take part in the next community clean-up day.

Organised by local Conservative campaigner Andrew Atkinson, Matt Mchale, owner of La Baguette and Cllr Phil Wynn, the events were launched in spring 2015 in an bid to bring back some pride in the town centre.

The next event, which will take place on Sunday 5th March, will bring together a team of volunteers from the Town Centre Forum, the local community, local Co-op stores, some councillors and Gateway Church.

Previous clean-ups have seen volunteers tackle Regent Street, Hope Street and Henblas Square.

Previously there has been criticism over the clean-up events, with a number of people questionning why the work is being carried out by volunteers rather than Wrexham Council.

However Mr Atkinson said the events are about “doing everything we can to take pride in our town”.

He continued: “People may argue that it is the council’s responsibility and that we pay council tax. My answer to that is yes we do, however that pot is getting smaller. However if we can take direct action and make things happen sooner, then we will.”

This weekend will see volunteers tackle Yorke Street and the High Street.

Mr Atkinson explained: “We will be tackling graffiti and mess left in empty shops as well as sprucing up the town and giving things a lick of paint.

“Gateway Church deserve special recognition for what they do to assist us in the town. Once again they have changed their church service time to the late afternoon so that they can bring the whole church along to help! It’s amazing and a big help.”
