Wrexham Adult Community Partnership has had its second annual community learning awards evening at Wrexham Library.

Yesterday we retweeted the Council’s picture, above, of the evening, and today we can give further detail of the event.

The Council say: “The evening was a huge success and was attended by more than 100 residents of all ages.”

The winners of the awards were:

  • Madeline Evans (Wrexham Community Essential Skills)
  • Kerry Gadsden (Wrexham Young Community Award )
  • Allan Smith (Wrexham Volunteer Award)
  • Norma Riach (Senior Wrexham Community Award)
  • Josie Rayworth (Wrexham Community Tutor Award)
  • Charlotte Valentine (Wrexham Community Progression Learner Award)
  • Caia Park Family Support Group and Plas Madoc Association of Volunteers (Wrexham Community Group Learning Award)
  • Tristan Thomas (Essential Skills in the Community Champion)
  • Gill Britten (Wrexham Lifetime Achievement Award)
  • ….and the special award of Overall Learner Award went to Charlotte Valentine.

Certificates of recognition were also presented to all those who were nominated for the National Institute of Adult Continuing Education (NIACE Dysgu Cymru) National Inspire Adult Learning Awards held in Llandudno last month. The Inspire! Awards recognise the outstanding effort and commitment made by learners and tutors, in pursuing their goals and realising their dreams.

We were told: “The Awards illustrate the different ways in which adults learn – from family learning to volunteering in the community; from the desire for a better job to responding to a life crisis.”

Jon Sankey, Wrexham Learning Festival Group Co-ordinator said ‘We were really pleased to see over twenty people nominated from Wrexham for the national awards and it was great to see their achievements recognised as part of the evening. It was a honour to share in their achievements and our congratulations go to them all’.

Kevern Kerswell, Deputy Director of Coleg Cambria and Chair of the Wrexham Adult Community Partnership said: “Everyone enjoyed the evening and I’d like to extend a big thank you to the presenters for announcing the awards, to Wrexham Library for the venue, The Coffee Shop for the refreshments, Chris Hughes who was the compere for the evening, to the Mayor and Mayoress, Councillor Alan Edwards and his wife Glenys and to Pam Hughes (a Wrexham learner) for the lovely flowers and Aled Lewis Evans.

“The evening was about recognising the overall achievement of the learners and the fantastic job that the tutors are doing, in most cases, over and above what is expected of them in their roles.

“A big congratulations goes to all the winners and we look forward to holding another event next year!”
