Adverse weather sees Wrexham’s Victorian Market scaled down

Wrexham’s Victorian Market has been scaled down to due to the expected adverse weather conditions.

The festive event, taking place on Thursday 7 December between midday and 8pm, attracts thousands to the city centre each year.

But this afternoon Wrexham Council confirmed that a scaled down market will now take place tomorrow due to the strong winds and heavy rain currently forecast by the Met Office.

A spokesperson for Wrexham Council said: “It is with great regret that due to adverse weather conditions, we announce that this year’s Victorian Market (7.12.23) is to be scaled down for health and safety reasons.

“Outdoor events of this nature are always subject to the unpredictability of the weather.

“The Victorian Market is a one day event which means that it is not feasible to hire the more sturdy wooden cabins that can withstand high winds as these are reserved by Christmas markets that run for a much longer period.”

Although the event will take place on a smaller scale, there is still plenty for visitors to enjoy tomorrow.

Some Christmas stalls will still be available for visitors at St Giles Church and at Ty Pawb, whilst the fairground in Queens Square will still go ahead.

The traditional Victorian rides are always popular and – with the exception of the ferris wheel – they are safe to operate in gusts of wind.

There will also be some food outlets offering warm festive food and drink.

Cllr Nigel Williams, Lead Member for Economy and Regeneration, said: “We know many people will be very disappointed as we are ourselves.

“However, the safety of stall-holders and visitors must be a priority.

“The team have worked really hard at short notice to ensure that although scaled down, this Christmas event will still be well worth attending.”
