A view from Wrexham’s Member of the Senedd

Wrexham.com for people living in or visiting the Wrexham area

Wrexham.com has invited the local Members of Parliament and Members of the Senedd to write a monthly article with updates on their work in their respective Parliaments and closer to home – you can find them all here. ‌

In this month’s column Wrexham’s Member of the Senedd, Lesley Griffiths, writes:

Many congratulations to Andrew Ranger on being elected as Wrexham’s new Member of Parliament.

Andrew and his campaign team worked incredibly hard over many months, listening to constituents and I have no doubt he will be an excellent MP for the people of Wrexham.

It was an outstanding result for Labour nationally and one of Sir Keir Starmer’s first undertakings as Prime Minister has been to visit the UK’s Devolved Governments to ‘reset’ relations, following a turbulent period under successive Conservative Governments in Westminster.

We are entering a new era of partnership, with two Governments working together on a shared vision for Wales’ future. I look forward to working closely with Andrew to help Wrexham grow and to unlock more opportunities for people in the city.

As prospective parliamentarians pounded the streets and canvassed for votes in the run up to the General Election, business carried on as usual for Members of the Senedd.

In recent weeks we have marked the 80th anniversary of the D-Day landings and the 42nd anniversary of the Falklands War.

In Wrexham, commemorative services took place at St Giles Church before a procession made its way through the city centre to the memorials at Bodhyfryd.

It was an honour to be part of the events, to lay wreaths and to pay my respects to all those who served in the conflicts.

We know Wrexham is a city with a proud military tradition and it was heartening to see so many members of the public attending the services.

Doctors in Wales have voted to accept the Welsh Government’s pay offer for 2023-24, bringing an end to the pay dispute and the strikes.

Consultants, junior and SAS (specialist, associate specialist, and specialty) doctors overwhelmingly accepted a 7.4% additional uplift taking the total to a 12.4% uplift for junior doctors for the 23/24 financial year, which will be backdated to April 2023.

We are all incredibly grateful to doctors, and our wider NHS workforce, for the tireless work they do day in and day out.

Resolving the pay issue and ending the industrial action here in Wales is good news for doctors, for our NHS services and for patients, both in Wrexham and across the country.

The Gŵyl Wal Goch Festival returned to Wrexham at the beginning of June.

Described as the ‘Festival for Football Lovers’, the event celebrates football culture and fans, and it all takes place at the spiritual home of Welsh football.

This was the third time Gŵyl Wal Goch has been held in Wrexham and after supporting previous festivals, it was a pleasure to be asked to officially open this year’s event in my role as the Welsh Government Cabinet Secretary for Culture & Social Justice.

The Festival celebrates the international language of football, highlighting how it has the power to unite people.

A variety of events took place throughout the town, including guest speakers, performances, talks, film premiers and activities, all of which celebrated the beautiful game.

Visiting schools is always a highlight of my job and it was lovely to recently spend some time in Ysgol Hafod y Wern.

Earlier this year, the school celebrated a very good Estyn Report and it was good to get the opportunity to congratulate the staff, students and governors for all their hard work.

Whilst touring the school, I met Year 6 pupil, Mollie Grodka. Mollie recently won the national Show Racism the Red Card Creative Competition and attended a ceremony in Cardiff to collect her award.  She claimed first place in the primary category for the Humanities Creative Competition, beating over 90,000 entries from over 400 schools in Wales. Well done Mollie!

It was another successful year for the Wrexham Walking Festival, with more than 550 people taking part in total.

During the nine-day event, people of all ages and abilities were invited to enjoy a series of free walks exploring the picturesque surroundings of North East Wales.

I’m a long-time supporter of the Festival and was pleased to join the team for a walk around Erddig Country Park.

Although the 2024 festival has reached its conclusion, organisers Walkabout Wrexham & District arrange walks throughout the year so if anyone is interested in finding out more, visit the website – www.walksinwrexham.com.
