1000+ Residents Show Support For New Village Health Centre

More than 1000 people have backed calls for a new health centre in a Wrexham village by signing a petition at their local supermarket.

The campaign for a new health centre in Cefn Mawr was launched a few weeks ago, with over 1000 people since showing their support and signing a petition in favour of the cause.

Clwyd South AM Ken Skates and councillors Ken Bathers and Derek Wright were stationed at Tesco in Cefn Mawr on Friday morning as part of the campaign for a new facility.

Cllr Bathers, chairman of Cefn Community Council, said the groundswell of support ‘sends a clear message’ to Betsi Cadwaladr University Health Board.

“We have now had well over 1,000 people sign our petition and I’m sure we’ll soon have another thousand. This shows the health board there’s a huge demand for this,” he said.

“Plans are in the pipeline for up to 500 new homes in our area, and that could mean 1,000-1,500 extra people. Our current services are barely coping, and any more families settling in the area may mean they will not get on a local doctor’s list.

“I will say again – our only chance of securing a medical centre for our community is obtaining the old Co-op site. It’s the only suitable place in the whole catchment area.”

Clwyd South Assembly Member Mr Skates, who started the petition last month, said: “We’ve comfortably passed our initial target of 1,000 signatures in three weeks, and we’ve got plenty of completed sheets still coming in.

“I’d like to thank Tesco for their hospitality and support, the staff were brilliant. I’d also like to thank everyone who has signed our petition so far – the campaign continues!”

The petition can be signed at Caritas Surgery, Cefn Post Office and George Edwards Hall.
